Here are some (jumbled) notes and observations that I made while experiencing my very first Deep Dish Swift. There might be omissions or inaccuracies as this is a decidedly personalized view. Feel free to reach out if something is missing.

The veterans for the conference that I met, were very welcoming to an obvious outsider. Making it a welcome space was a big break from large-scale conferences where it is quite impersonal on many different fronts (for better or worse). I like that the community feels growing but not yet super-big (from what I can see). Because of the subject(s) and focus for Deep Dish Swift, this is one place where the intersection of Design and “Pure Tech” still has so much synergy (yes.. I used that word). A very big personal thank you to Adam for being extra welcome to a first timer and invaluable tips on how to navigate a brand new space (for me) [^1].

The conference ran very smooth from my eyes (note: I was not watching that carefully), the conference organizers look like they have been around the block (and some) and made it feel very natural. In my experiences in volunteering as a gopher for conferences, the amount of (unsuspected) things that can go wrong and the sudden chaos that brings ends up being a constant series of fires that occur throughout the event. So thanks to all of the folk behind the scenes, especialy the first-and-last.

I found lots of takeaways from all of the talks. I attended all of them. However, one talk that I took to heart was the message in Raj’s talk which provided an oasis on inspiration in these times of big change (and worries) for the tech industry (and perhaps many other industries as well).

I did not get a chance to speak with all the speakers but the cozy atmosphere made them very approachable to talk with. Space Paranoids, forever man.

The content of the talks was a mix of the tech nitty gritty (cross-platform Swift was definitely nitty gritty) and soft tech concerns. The event was also livestreamed so should be available on their YT channel. I am sure the organizers would appreciate something for the tip jar if you watch the live streams and were not able to attend the event.

It was great being at a table where we got talk about Ignite and not having to explain this is not only a verb (at least if you’re into Swift). It also powers this blog. Write Swift, not HTML.

It was also great to hear about networking matters as the realm where many Deep Dish Swift attendees inhabits means that the network is the leviathan of the deep always awaiting… Also being able to actually talk with people that (I think) Swift occupies a very interesting space in things networking and potentially has a chance to better the programming ergonomics around the socket() monoculture.

Catching a real Deep Dish with a pickup group and check out an alternative to Lou Malnati’s was awesome. Loved the conversations and hearing veterans talk shop is always interesting (to me). Nothing like building some camaradie (I hope) by sharing the pains of the day to day. Or perhaps another way to say it Blood, Sweat and Pixels

Having a sidechat on the energy concerns angle for LLMs is always interesting. So much that can be talked about but to keep that brief. Let’s just refer to Electrify Everything

Heroku for backend Swift is (errr could be) a thing.

Also very, very big thanks to the folks at Citizenry App for the great conversations and teaching me a ton on how to approach analytics in this whole space.

Plenty more I could write about but this post is getting long as it is. Feel free to reach out if something catches your interest (or I made a glaring omission).

[^1]: If you are curious what those tips actaully where, I would suggest you find Adam yourself where he might be found and ask him yourself.
